Holmfirth: Place-Names and Settlement (1994) by George Redmonds:

At the heart of the tiny hamlet of Barnside is a group of mellow stone buildings which date back to the 17th century at least. An inscribed stone and much of the fabric of the barns and dwelling-house testify to this antiquity, but there have been alterations and additions over the years [...] If Barnside now seems to lie in a secluded part of Hepworth, and off the beaten track, it was not always so, for until the A616 was built the farm was on an ancient highway. This is mentioned as early as 1435 as leading south to Carlecotes.
