Almondbury

Almondbury, (p.) in the wap. of Agbrigg and honour of Pontefract ; 3 miles SE. of Huddersfield, is a place of great antiquity. Here was once a royal seat of the English Saxons ; near it is a very high hill, where are the visible remains of a rampart, and some ruins of a fortification; this is supposed to have been the Roman station, called by Antonius, in his Itinerary, Cambodunum. The living is a vicarage ; present incumbent the Rev. John Fleming Parker. Besides the church which is a venerable edifice, there is a Free Grammar School, founded by James I. and now endowed with about £120. per annum. Rev. Walter Smith, master. Population, 5679.
