Holmfirth: Place-Names and Settlement (1994) by George Redmonds:
This tiny hamlet is in an elevated but relatively sheltered position. It dates back to 1308 at least, in which year a man called Thomas, the son of Roger, gave 12d for 20 acres of new land near his house. Subsequently, for a hundred years or more, the court rolls refer to a Cartworth family who were named after the hamlet and who presumably lived there, but their surname seems to have become extinct in the early 1400s. By 1472 the tenant was called Hinchliffe and this family maintained its interest in Arrunden for several hundred years, even though other surnames appeared there from time to time, e.g. Roebuck (1486), Crosland (1584) and Genn (1665).
