Allen Haigh (1862-1942)

Allen Haigh served as the General Manager of the Cooperative Stores in Meltham in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Biography

He was most likely born on 9 August 1862, the son of slubber James Sheperd Haigh of Paddock and his wife Jane, and was baptised at Huddersfield Parish Church on 28 December 1862.

He married Flora Broome[1], daughter of Elizabeth Broome, in 1888 and they had two known sons:

  • Arnold Haigh (1890-1961)[2]
  • Stanley Haigh (c.1899-1987)[3]

By the time of the 1891 Census, he was working as a grocer's manager and living on Nab Croft Lane, Lockwood. Within a year, he had become the General Manager of the Co-operative Stores in Meltham, following the resignation of Mr. Yearsley.

He remained in the post at Meltham for at least 20 years, writing the society's jubilee souvenir book which was published in 1911.

Flora Haigh died in 1930, aged 66.

Allen Haigh of 313 Leeds Road, Huddersfield, died 4 March 1942 at the Nursing Home on Trinity Street, Huddersfield. Probate was granted to his two sons, draughtsman Arnold Haigh and confectioner Stanley Haigh.
