1st Battalion, Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding)
The 1st Battalion of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment (West Riding) was a regular battalion in the British Army.
History
The Boer War (1899-1902)
The 1st Battalion was deployed to South Africa and arrived into Cape Town in early 1900.
First World War
In 1905, the 1st Battalion was deployed to Lahore, India. At the outbreak of hostilities in 1914, the battalion was one of eight garrisons to remain in India during throughout the war, serving with the 2nd (Rawalpindi) Division and then with the 1st (Peshawar) Division.
The battalion then served in the Third Anglo-Afghan War of 1919 before returning to England in January 1921.
Later History
During the inter-war period, the 1st Battalion was stationed in England apart from overseas duties in Turkey and Gibraltar (1922-23) and Malta (1935-38).
