What is West Yorkshire Archive Service?

West Yorkshire Archive Service exists to preserve the county's heritage of historical documents and to help members of the public make use of them. The Service is funded by the five Metropolitan District Councils in West Yorkshire, and forms part of West Yorkshire Joint Services.

The Service has its headquarters in Wakefield, and offices in Bradford, Calderdale (Halifax), Kirklees (Huddersfield), and Leeds. Anyone interested in the history of Yorkshire, who would like to discover what records have survived, is welcome to visit any of the above five offices. There is no charge for personal visitors, except for copies of documents. The Service also offers a research service.

Whatever the purpose of your research or the subject of your enquiry, the Archive Service welcomes your interest in our collections.

If you have recently made a visit to one of our offices to view a document, or are engaged in academic or personal research into any topic about the history of West Yorkshire (or the West Riding) we encourage you to contribute to Off The Record and share your knowledge with others interested in the history of West Yorkshire.
