Horton Family, Field House, Kirkheaton

The following source list was originally available only on paper in one of the West Yorkshire Archive Service offices. It may have been compiled many years ago and could be out of date. It was designed to act as a signpost to records of interest on a particular historical subject, but may relate only to one West Yorkshire district, or be an incomplete list of sources available. Thomas Horton was a fancy woollen manufacturer at Kirkheaton; his son George took up a career in engineering and was employed by Leeds City Council as Borough surveyor. He was also an active Freemason.

Hazel Horton was born in Scholebrook Avenue, Chapeltown Leeds c1915. Her mother was Edith Ruddlesdin from Birdswell, Barnsley and was George Horton's second wife. She was originally engaged as a nurse to take care of the first Mrs Horton who was an invalid. Mrs Horton asked Hazel's mother to marry and take care of her husband on his death bed. Hazel Horton was an active church member, attending Salem Chapel in Leeds. She was also a schoolteacher based near East End Park, Leeds and was evacuated with her pupils during the war. Like her father, she was a talented pianist.

Following her father's death and her mother's growing ill health, Hazel retired. She also moved from Chapeltown to 23 Richmond Road, Headingley where she stayed until her death in 2006.
