Established in rented premises in 1872, the Battye Street Board School, Battye Street was built in 1873. It became known as the Battye Street Council School from c1902 and then Battye Street County Infants School, it closed in 1995.
The earliest log books for the shcool date from the opening of the girls school in 1874 and the boys school of the same year. Battye Street Evening School opened October 1893.
