Gladys Haigh (c.1921-?)

A photo postcard which belonged to Huddersfield swimming instructor Harry Mellor (1895-?). On the reverse is written "Gladys Haigh".

Gladys was born circa 1921, the daughter of Mr. W. Haigh "of the staff of the Bath's Department" of Huddersfield Corporation, and attended Longley Hall School. She is first mentioned in local newspaper reports of August 1934 and was a member of the Huddersfield Cambridge Ladies' Swimming Club, coached by Harry Mellor. In 1936, aged 15, she took part in qualification races for the Olympic Games. She continued to compete until the outbreak of war in 1939.
