Meltham in Focus
A Photographic Record of Meltham,
its people, industries, organisations,
societies, and events
Meltham in Focus has been compiled by K. Oldfield of the Meltham Photographic club, for the community of Meltham.
Our thanks go to the many people and organisations who have helped in many ways to record this little history of our small township for the present and future generations.
Compiled 1994 with additions.
If any members of the public have any photographs of old Meltham or information they think could be included, please contact the librarian or a member of the Photographic Club
These volumes are not for re-sale, but for reference only and are to remain in Meltham Library.

Meltham Photographic Club would like to place on record their grateful thanks for the help they have received in putting together these 5 Volumes of
MELTHAM IN FOCUS. It is impossible to name every person who helped, but the
following do merit a mention. The Kirklees Museum and Library Service and the Huddersfield Examiner. Meltham Parish Council, for their financial help. Melpack Ltd for supplying the means of mounting the photographs. fhe people of Meltham, without whose help this project would not have got off the ground, they not only supplied the original photographs for us to copy but also the information regarding dates, names and places. The members of Meltham Photographic Club for collecting and copying the photographs, and most of all
our Secretary, Mr Ken Oldfield, for all the work he has put into the 5 Volumes.
The only stipulation we have is that all 5 Volumes be kept in Meltham Library
and not allowed out of the building. Also if the Library has to close at some future date, the Volumes be handed over to Meltham Parish Council for safe
keeping.

MELTHAM 1901
Meltham is a township and pleasant village in an open valley at the foot of a mountainous moorland ridge and is a parish, formed July 10, 1874, from that of Almondbury, and the terminus of a branch of the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway, 5 miles south-west from Huddersfield, 22 north-west from Holmfirth and 7 south-west from Almondbury, in the Colne Valley division of the Riding, Upper Agbrigg petty sessional division, upper division of Agbrigg wapentake, Huddersfield union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Huddersfield and diocese of Wakefield. The place is governed by an Urban District Council, formed under the provisions of the "Local Government Act, 1894," in place of the former Local Board established in 1860. The village is lighted with gas from works belonging to the District Council. The church of St. Bartholomew, a plain stone edifice, was erected in 1651 and consecrated by Henry Tilson, Bishop of Elphin; in 1786 it was rebuilt and now consists of chancel in the Norman style, nave and a western tower with pinnacles, containing 8 bells with chimes playing 14 tunes: the tower and bells were added in 1855, and in 1877 the church was restored, a chancel erected, and the interior reseated, at a cost of £5,000, to which Edward Brook esq. was a munificent contributor, and who also gave the set of chimes: the font was presented in 1878 by the Misses Brook, and is in the Norman style, being to some extent a copy of the font in’ the parish church of Ancaster, a model of which was in the Exhibition of 1851: the pulpit of carved oak wes presented by the late Thomas Denton Scholes esq. manager of Meltham Mills, and contains a panel of oak which was in the pulpit of the old church, with the inscription, "Cathedra Veritatis," and the date 1651: the brass lectern was presented in 1878, in memory of Lewis Lloyd Jones, by his sister: the church contains several monuments to the Brook family, the Armytages of Thickhollins, and one to the Rev. Joseph Hughes, a former vicar of the parish, who died in 1863: the organ was presented by the late Joseph Hirst esq. of Wilshaw, and was restored in 1877, at a cost of £250: in 1900 two memorial windows were erected to the Rev. Edw. Collis Watson, vicar 1863-1900: The erection of this church in the time of the Commonwealth, when Episcipacy was proscribed, makes it remarkable at the time, the see of York was vacant and Bishop Tilson was then serving the cure of Cumberworth: there are 800 sittings. The registar dates from the year 1669 and is in good preservation. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £495, including 10 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Almondbury, and held since 1900 by the Rev. George Julius © Tatham M.A. of Keble College,
