HISTORY OF THE MURDER

Originally built as “Cragg -House,” the lonely moorland dwelling about a mile from Greenfield, just off the Holmfirth Road, later became an inn called “ The Shooter’s Arms,” and was kept by Jack Bradbury. It was familiarly known as “ Jack’s,” and when his son William took over the licence it was known as “ Bill’s o’ Jacks.” For some unknown reason, William Bradbury changed the name from ‘“ The Here s Arms’ to “ The Moorcock Inn.”

On the night of April 2nd, 1832, both William Bradbury and Thomas Bradbury were foully done to death, and the identity of the person or persons responsible has never been discovered.

The grave of the victims, in Saddleworth Churchyard, is covered by a massive table tombstone with the following inscription:

‘‘Here lie interred the dreadfully bruised and lacerated bodies of William Bradbury and Thomas, his son, who were together savagely murdered in an inhumanly horrid manner, on Monday night, April 2nd, 1832; William being 84 and Thomas 46 years I

AUTHOR’S NOTE

On the late evening of April 2nd, 1832 the “ Bill’s 0’ Jack’s” Inn, just off the newly-constructed turnpike road between Holmfirth and Greenfield, was the scene of a particularly brutal double murder. William Bradbury, the landlord, and Thomas, his son, were the victims, and to this day the mystery of their death remains unsolved. In expounding a solution I have endeavoured to make it both feasible and dramatically sound; also as “‘ The Stage ” reported of the professional production by the Oldham Repertory Theatre Club—to present it acceptably in terms of contemporary theatre.

I sincerely hope you will enjoy what we have to offer you. The play is “strong meat,” the dialogue earthy but true to the period, and I make no excuse for its inclusion. I personally do not like bad language, but in a play, when it is an essential part of a character- isation, then I feel we should accept it. “ Theatre” represents “Life,” and it is not much good trying to pretend people don’t swear in real life. To be theatrically sound a character must speak as he naturally would or he becomes a travesty and the play looses all its authenticity. —
