FOREWORD

THIS book is a collection of figures, ‘but I have every reason to

believe those who peruse its pages will invest many of the figures

with all the excitement of the Rugby League game and recall the

thrills of the particular matches they witnessed. It has been a long

but fascinating compilation, and I have to express my thanks to both

Mr. Vincent Firth and Mr. A. N. Gaulton, of the staff of “ Rugby

League Review”, for very valuable assistance in checking various match

In “Claret and Gold” I told the remarkable story of the rise to world-wide fame of Rugby I League football through the men who played for the Huddersfield Club. The equally famous teams whom

the Fartowners have played in League and Cup-ties over the past fifty-

six seasons (actually fifty-four playing seasons for Huddersfield) are

recorded in the pages of this new work.

Some, like Halifax, overflow to a third page; others make but a single Cup appearance. Of the seventy-five different teams with which I

Huddersfield have at one time or another played, many are now hot

even a memory, but who is there who does not remember St. Helens

Recreation or has heard tell of Brighouse Rangers and Manningham ?

No matter how many or how few matches have been played, they — are all part of the Fartown story. It is a truly magnificent one, and

more pages are sure to be added to it in the seasons which lie ahead.

In both League and two games Cup-ties the match played at Haddon field is printed first, although the away match may have been played previously during the respective season.

During the first two seasons (1895-96 and 1896-97) of Northern Union (now Rugby League) football, the game was played under Rugby Union rules—fifteen-a-side—with scoring as follows: A_ goal kicked from a try, 5 points; a dropped goal or goal kicked from a fair catch or from the field of play, 4 points; a ee goal, 3 points; a try, 3 points.

Present scoring rule brought into operation from season 1897- 98. (A). try 3 points, and a goal 2 points, with. the try to count if a goal is kicked as a result of the try).

Thirteen-a-side football from season 1906-07.

The Northern Union Challenge Cup became the Rugby League : Challenge Cup from season 1922-23, and the latter title is used throughout the records.

The Huddersfield ground was suspended from February 10th to 28th, I both dates inclusive.

No football was played at the Huddersfield ground between April Oth, _ 1917 (v. Halifax), and March 22nd, 1919 (v. Hunslet).

The Yorkshire Challenge Cup Competition for season 1918- 19 was played during April and May, 1919. I

“ Highest Huddersfield Score” is the most points ced: in one match against the particular team named. “Heaviest Huddersfield Defeat” is the most points scored in one match by the respective team against Huddersfield, and does not necessarily mean the biggest margin of points by which the Fartowners may have been defeated in the meetings between the two teams.

Because of the difference in the number of matches played it haw not been possible to publish the records in alphabetical order, but all the clubs, teams, etc., will be found listed in the Index.

Every care has been taken in compiling the records contained in this book, but no responsibility can be accepted for any error which I may be disclosed.

New Year’s Day, 1945, Huddersfield met and defeated a Cumber- vi land team by 30 points to 3 points in Workington Town’s Inaugural - Match at Borough Park. The club was admitted to membership of the Northern Rugby League on January 24th, 1945, and caused a sensation by defeating Broughton Rangers (now Belle Vue Rangers) 27—5 in their opening League fixture on August 25th, 1945. They have been respon- sible for many further sensations since that date. ee Only a last-minute try saved Huddersfield from defeat when the two teams met for the first time at Fartown on September 27th, 1947. It was an unlucky meeting, for Anderson fractured his collar-bone after ‘about half an hour’s play. The following Saturday Town turned the tables and beat Huddersfield 10—3. Incidentally, this was Pat Devery’s

first game in England.

LEEDS—continued I

BEDS are known td as “The Old Enemy,” and et two ! clubs have only missed playing each other in six seasons of R.L. © football. The late Harold Wagstaff made his initial appearance at against Leeds on December Ist, 1906, while another great player—Ray Markham—made his debut in English football when Leeds were the visitors (January 7th, 1933). No “friendly” match has been played between the two teams, but Huddersfield defeated Leeds in a seven-a-side final at Headingley on May 14th, 1938.

OR the first meeting of Huddersfield and Wigan at Fartown on

: November 23rd, 1895, there was “not a large gate,’ but Wigan have on two occasions since broken the gate record at Fartown. Huddersfield defeated Wigan in the final for the Northern League Championship in consecutive seasons (1911-12 and 1912-13), but since the last war the tables have been turned with a vengeance (1945-46 and 1949-50). A thirty-six points defeat at Central Park in a replayed League match sealed the Far- towners’ fate in the first division of the Northern League at the end of the 1903-04 season. The clubs did not meet again until the exhibition match staged at Kensal Rise, London, on March 28th, 1908.

BRADFORD NORTHERN” 4 I TUDDERSFIELD have been honoured on three occasions by playing the opening match at the different grounds occupied by Northern I since they commenced their career at Greenfield, Dudley Hill, on Sep- © tember 7th. 1907. Birch Lane was opened the following season (Sep- _ tember 12th, 1908), and their present ground—Odsal Stadium—on Sep- tember Ist, 1934. Each time the Fartowners were the winners. Bradford Northern, formed following the abandonment of Northern Union football by the Park Avenue club, only became a power in the game during the last war and the seasons immediately following. Hudders- field captured the R.L. Challenge Cup for the fifth time when they beat Northern in the two games final of season 1944-45. Since then Northern have twiced knocked the Fartowners out of the Competition, and also gained a success over them in a Yorkshire Challenge Cup Final.

BATLEY—continued

UDDERSFIELD’S defeat of fe iy the Vpekshire Challenge Cup Final played at Headingley on November 27th, 1909, marked the commencement of their great Cup-winning career, and was

the first football trophy to be brought back to the town under the ‘ ‘Northern I

Union” code. _- Two famous Fartowners—the late Douglas Clark and Henry. Tiffany —selected visits by Batley for their respective Benefit Matches (Clark, I January 24th, 1925; Tiffany, March 28th, 1936). Gwyn Thomas, former Wigan Test full- back, made his debut in the Fartown colours against Batley on September 6th, 1919. Batley have never played Huddersfield in a R.L. Challenge Cup-tie at Fartown. Twelve of the League fixtures and one Yorkshire Challenge Cup-tie have ended in drawn matches. The opening game of the 1945-46 season was designated as a “Jubilee Match” to commemorate the playing of fifty years of Northern Union (Rugby League) football, and Mr.. Harry I Lodge, who captained the Huddersfield team in the first N.U. game played ae Pore on September 14th, 1895, kicked off.

N the 1914 semi-final for the N.U. (now R.L.) Challenge Cup, the Boulevarders “surprised, flattened, and battered” the Fartowners, and won the Cup in the final. A fortnight after the playing of this match it was the turn of Huddersfield to “flatten” Hull in the Northern League semi-final play-off, but unlike Hull there was on final triumph for dersfield. There was also another occasion when the Fartowners smarted under a defeat by their old rivals, for in the Northern League final of 1920 they had to face Hull without five of their key players who had . departed for Australia. Christmas Day visits took place between the two clubs from 1908 to 1914. The late Stanley Moorhouse and Arthur Swinden shared a joint benefit when Hull were the visitors to Fartown on April Ist, 1922. Both

_ Frank Royston and the late Leslie Adams made their debut in Hull fix-

tures. And Joe Oliver, who was introduced to senior R.L. football by Huddersfield, was carried shoulder high off the Fartown ground when his brilliant leadership and play won Hull the Northern League Championship on May 9th, 1936.

SALFORD

Wf ATCHES between Huddersfield and Salford have always been full of : excitement and thrills. Happily, not all the encounters ended so I

disastrously for the Fartowners as the meeting on January 31st, 1903. The decisions of the referee did not give satisfaction, and there was a

scene of disorder at the end of the match. The Northern League Com- —

‘mittee suspended the Fartown ground for a period of eighteen days. When Salford registered fifty-seven points without reply from Hud- dersfield on March 31st, 1902, it was due to the committee sending the “A” team to fulfil the fixture and “resting” the first team players for the Cup- tie against Salford at the end of the week. Arthur Larard, who repre- sented South Africa in Rugby Union games against England, made his debut against Salford at Fartown on September 28th, 1901.

winter Gt 1904, and __ the fiiddersheld health authorities and

the Fartown Football Committee decided that the Dewsbury match should

be played behind closed doors. Police on horse and foot were stationed

outside the ground, and only a few score members watched the match

from the stand. Huddersfield have had Dewsbury as opponents in Yorkshire Challenge Cup-ties -more times than any other club. From October 2nd, 1909, to March 17th, 1915 (both dates inclusive) the Fartowners enjoyed a run of sixteen successive victories over Dewsbury. Players who have made their debut for Huddersfield in matches against Dewsbury include Jim Davies, the late Stanley Moorhouse, Tom Gleeson, W. H. Ganley, and Dai M. Davies, while Ben Gronow selected Dewsbury’s visit to Fartown

March 8th, 1924, for his benefit.

1904-05, when Huddersfield was relegated to the Second Division, and the two seasons of 1917-18 and 1918-19, when the club closed down). In addi- tion to League fixtures and Cup football, since 1925 the two teams have prefaced the opening of the season by playing for a charity cup on behalf of the respective local infirmaries. This match is now played for the benefit of junior R.L. football. I en I The first thirteen-a-side game in which the Fartowners engaged was against Halifax at Thrum Hall in the opening match of season 1906-07 (September Ist, 1906). The exchange of visits at Christmas originated dur- ing the first European War, and since 1919 there has been only one break I in these matches (season 1935-36). Py Halifax brought the Fartowners’ great Cup-winning career to an end they beat them by a single penalty goal in the semi-final for the N.U. I Challenge Cup on April 16th, 1921. And it was the “blue and whites” who dashed Huddersfield’s Final hopes in the last semi-final played in this Competition at Odsal on April 2nd, 1949. Ll he From the following records it will! be observed that honours are about even in the 153 matches played, Halifax leading with two more victories than the Fartowners.

DMITTED to senior status in 1926, the then “babes” of the Rugby League caused a big surprise by defeating Huddersfield in their first R.L. Challenge Cup Final at Wembley on May 4th, 1935. This was

the first occasion the Fartowners had tasted defeat in a R.L. Challenge Cup Final, but on the afternoon’s play Castleford were the better team.

During their first Northern League season Castleford played on a ground in Lock Lane, but subsequently the local Soccer club sold them their present Wheldon Road ground. Huddersfield were the visitors when the enclosure was officially inaugurated as a R.L. ground on August 27th, 1927, while Ernest Mills. the Fartowners’ Australian wing three-quarter,

A H. BASKERVILLE’S “All Blacks” was the first overseas N.U. team “to tour England and they played their second match at Fartown. Three of the tourists were subsequently signed by Huddersfield—E. Wrig- ley and W. Mc Vey Trevarthen, who had taken part in the 1907 match, and C. A. Byrne. Harmony did not prevail among the members of the second New Zealand touring team, and their visit to Fartown attracted only 5,000 spectators. Inclement weather ruined both the football and the attendance when the Kiwis were last seen at Fartown.

The game against McKivat’s team in 1911 is still regarded in many quarters as the finest exhibition of football seen at Fartown. Harold Horder was the hero of the third Australian team to visit Fartown (1921), I and he scored three tries and kicked six goals. A. E. Fiddes made his debut in the Huddersfield first team when the Kangaroos came to Fartown on November 18th, 1933.

In order that they could open their 1948 tour at Huddersfield on September 18th, the Fartown club paid half the cost of bringing the Australians by air from Marseilles. Certain incidents during this first match earned the visitors a noisy reception from the crowd.
