Background to this publication

Hepworth is a small village to the south east of the small town of Holmfirth in West Yorkshire. A significant number of documents and plans relating to the Shaw Family of Hepworth were donated to the Huddersfield & District Family History Society in 2017 and this valuation of their Estate was included amongst them. It is a detailed schedule of the land and property in Shaw ownership prepared by Jon Brook and Nephew, Surveyors of Huddersfield on 16th November 1874. It lists the land and property with tenants’ names, areas, field names and descriptions as well as the rent being paid, giving a fascinating snapshot of Hepworth in 1874. The original document came into our possession as part of a large batch of donated documents relating to the Shaw Family of Hepworth as collected by Sam Shaw (1853 — 1930). It has been possible to transcribe and publish this document, along with a separate booklet containing a full schedule of the 1828 Claims under the Inclosure Act for the Township of Hepworth, thanks to National Lottery players whose generosity enabled the receipt of a grant from the Sharing Heritage Lottery Fund to finance this project.

My Valuation of the hereinbefore described Land and Buildings producing a present Rental as above of £604.11.0, but, which might be increased, amounts to the sum of Thirteen thousand two hundred and Eighty Eight pounds (13,288) and Minerals £5000.

In addition to the above Rent there is an income of a minimum Rent of £200 received from Messrs Hirst and Lockwood for coal, which, is leased to them for 21 years from 1874.

There is also a Rent of £120 a year, received from Mr Craven the owner of the Hepworth Iron Works, for a minimum coal Rent and “Wayleave’, but, as the Works are now standing, he has applied for a reduction, which it is proposed to accede to.

‘There is supposed to be about 140 acres of “Hard Bed Coal” to get, worth from £80 to £90 per acre, and 20 to 30 acres of “Soft Bed’, worth about £35 per acre.
